I hear parents asking for help all the time after they discover their child is binge eating. The very first thing I advise is parents think what are they doing to set this up. Typical reason a child will binge is because the parents have put the child on a diet, and the only way they can get what they need food-wise is to eat in secret, eat when parents aren't around. We often see children binging when they're not allowed to have sweets. How are they going to get some candy? They have to do it in secret. Set up for binge eating. So I advise parents to think about what are they doing, is their child deprived of something? Now, if it's a really serious problem, I advise parents to figure out some way to be home. The logical time for a child to binge is when they're home alone. This may mean that your child needs an after school activity. Ask them. Is there something you'd like to do after school? What can we do for you? I've had parents have to re-arrange their work schedule just to be home, and in some ways re-create the old-fashioned 1950's family where the child comes home from school and mom or dad's there fixing them a lovely snack. The child eats the snack, the food is put away, and they go and do their homework. Just that little change can make a big difference.
