Eating disorders are starting younger and younger. And the earliest that I know of a report of a classic eating disorder in a young child is five years old. And that is so young. It´s shocking to even think about that. It´s very important for parents to be aware of all the symptoms because it´s the parents´ job really to pick up on the subtle changes that might be putting their kid at risk. For example, most parents think of eating disorders affecting girls more than boys. In young kids, it´s 50% are boys. Little boys can have classic eating disorders. The eating disorder that´s most common in young kids is anorexia. It´s very rare, that may be changing, to have bulimia in a very young, in an under 10 year old child. 50% are boys. So we need to be careful and watchful of our boys. If our little boy isn´t growing, we should be concerned that he might have an eating disorder. If our little girl isn´t growing, we should be concerned about that. One symptom that parents should watch for is increase in picky eating. Now, all kids are picky at a certain level but picky eating that´s increasing, watch and be cautious that your child is not moving down towards an eating disorder.
