At the FBI, we came across a recent example of someone who had a relationship online with an adult. They were certain of the fact that they were having a relationship with another child. So we asked them: How is it that you think you know this person? They were certain of the fact that it was a friend of theirs. Upon reflection, they recalled that the person was introduced to them by somebody else. Upon further reflection, the person who introduced this person, didn't know them either. It was a introduction from somebody else. What we took away from this is that adults don't always know how they know somebody, they just know them. Children are the same way. They think they know somebody from a certain context or situation, and they don't. They only know from somebody introducing them, but their reflections are that they know them from the real world.
