How do parents use Megan's Law? Megan's Law is an interesting concept. Please need to understand it. There are two sections to Megan's Law. Number one, law enforcement must register sex offenders who have committed a sex crime upon their release from prison. The second component of that law is that the public should have access to the information, so they can use it to protect their families. How is that done? It's done via the Internet. Every state has their own Megan's Law directory, that allows you to log on and find out who the offenders are based upon a lot of different criteria. One of the most common would be the neighborhood criteria. Where are the sex offenders that live in your neighborhood? Find that information out, share it with your children, and instruct them to avoid those individuals. It is not about vigilante justice. It's simply about taking information that the Government feels we need to know because of the high recidivism rate for those individuals, and using it to protect our kids.
