There are many misconceptions about raising bilingual kids that we really need to debunk. One of the main ones, one that we hear a lot, is; "My child is going to be confused. They are hearing two languages at the same time. I'm going to confuse him. He's never going to learn English. If he doesn't learn English, he's going to be at a huge disadvantage when they start school." Totally untrue, and my daughter is living proof. She only heard Spanish from the day she was born, and yet, she learned English beautifully and is learning in both languages. Children are made to absorb languages as they hear, as many sounds as they hear. If the hear a language more than 60 percent of the time, they will learn it. If they hear both of those languages consistently throughout the day, they will learn. Their brains are wired to learn as many languages as they hear. Another misconception is that if a child has a speech delay, it's due to them being bilingual. It's not true. We have had many speech experts tell us that, if a child has a speech delay, they are going to have it; no matter how many languages they speak. That is completely untrue.
