Many families who adopt children with Reactive Attachment Disorder seek services from therapists very early on in the placement due to the difficulties that they experience with them. However, many mental health professionals are not trained in attachment therapy perspective and do traditional one-on-one therapy with the child and try to develop a relationship with the child, and then use that relationship as a bridge back to the family. We really try to skip that part in attachment therapy and work with the child and the family very much together so that we want to help the child repair his or her relationship with the parents. Attachment therapy doesn't see the goal as therapy as having a child develop a relationship with a therapist but rather that the attachment therapist would want to help the child develop and/or repair his or her relationship with their new adoptive parents.
