My name is Tom Hobson, usually known as "Teacher Tom." I am a preschool teacher at the Woodland Park Cooperative Preschools in Seattle, Washington. I'm also a blogger and I've been doing that for the last three years. I've been going to cooperative preschools for the last 13 years, first as a parent when I got involved, because my mother-in-law, my mother and my wife - the three most important people in my life - said my daughter was too young to be dropped off at preschool and a cooperative was a place where I got to go and being a teacher to my child and work in the classroom with her every day. And I never left. I went on and I got my teaching instruction and I became a teacher and for the last decade, I've been teaching children from 2 years old up to 5 years old and they come to me and spend 3 years. I get to teach them from the time that they are toddlers in diapers all the way 'til they're big, "sophisticated" kids ready for kindergarten. I've been married for 25 years, all to the same woman. I have a daughter who is now 15 years old and is the love of my life and I'm here to tell you parenting teenagers is wonderful. I love doing it. I am an artist; I create a lot of different kinds of art. I kind of became more known for carving books and things like that, but also created a performance art group and if you look at my blog, the picture at the top of the blog is me in my superhero costume. That's my alter ego, Captain Superhugger. We have a group of about a hundred of us who go to public events and we do exactly what it sounds like, we just hug people and it's very powerful, moving piece of performance art.

Tom Hobson

Co-Op Preschool Teacher

Tom is a preschool teacher, blogger, artist, and author. For the past 10 years, he’s worked for the Woodland Park Cooperative preschools, teaching two to five year olds in Seattle, Washington where he lives with his wife and daughter. His award-winning blog, “Teacher Tom,” has earned him an international following as a leading proponent of a progressive, play-based curriculum and the cooperative model of early childhood education, as well as a fierce advocate for public policies that support the whole child and the teaching of democratic values to even our youngest citizens. His blog, like his classroom, is a place of exploration of the physical, social, political, emotional, and even spiritual world. It’s a place of experimentation, where the adults learn every bit as much as the children.

Tom is the author of A Parent’s Guide To Seattle, a regular speaker on early childhood education, a board member of the Fremont Arts Council, and a founding member of the Superhuggers performance art ensemble.
