In my family, all four of us have different skin colors. And so, my son has dark skin and blue eyes. My daughter has very light skin and hazel eyes. And so, what we do is we tell them that even though we all have different skin colors, we are a family and that our son looks more like mommy and our daddy looks more like daddy. And when my kids were really young, they had trouble understanding who within our family was African American and who was white. They didn´t understand the concept of being mixed. Now that they are eight and 11, they understand the concept of what it means to be mixed. But again, it´s an ongoing conversation about that even if your skin colors are different, you are still a family.
