It is important to create good study habits for your child from an early age. I have two strategies that work best for young children in order to begin the process of developing good, lifelong study habits. The first is scaffolded assistance. This is where a parent helps their child with his or her homework just enough to ensure success. So the majority of their homework is being done independently and you are there to help and to praise when your child needs the help. This develops an independent, resilient studier. The second is even if your child does not get homework in kindergarden, first and second grade, which some of our children don´t, it is important to set up good study habits. This includes doing homework at the same time in the same place in a dedicated workspace every day after school even if it is just an activity. And it is also important to set your child up in an area where there is no technology. It is important that children don´t start doing homework with the computer and the iPod and the television nearby.
