In order to be successful in life and in school, we need high-level skills called "executive skills." These are skills such as organization, time-management, planning, and prioritization. These are the skills that help us stay on track and get our goals met.
One of the most important skills is metacognition. Metacognition is the ability to take a top-down view of your behavior at any point in time and know whether or not you are on track to meet your goals. Kids who have good metacognitive skills are able to tell whether they are putting in the right amount of effort, whether they are studying enough, and whether they are getting what they need to out of school.
Kids who have ADHD often have a lot of difficulty with that skill. In fact, kids who have ADHD often have a lot of difficulty all of the executive skills. Another really important executive skill is planning and prioritization. Kids who are able to plan out their tasks, get things done, know what they have to do first, are always more successful in school.
Time management is an extremely important executive skill. Kids that are able to start their projects on time, get them done on time, and stick within that time budget, always have a much easier time in school.
