A personal record keeping system. I can't tell you how important this is. When we were first trying to get services for our daughter, the first thing we needed to do was get all the records for her entire education. I had the floor filled with -- I kept everything. First Grade, Second Grade, I kept everything. I had folders all over the floor. We didn't realize it, but the pattern was there. It was so clear and evident when the psychologist went through everything. Keep really good records. Know exactly what is going on. Keep a journal. My child did this today. My child did that today. Today was a good day. Today was not a good day. We had a good minute, before this happened. Keep a journal because it is going to help you, in the long run, get the services you need. It really is. It's going to help the professionals diagnose your child. Record keeping is critical. I suggest you start right this minute.

Dad

Jay Gaylen is the dad of a now 22-year old daughter who was diagnosed as a teen with Reactive Attachment Disorder (RAD), Bi-Polar II and ADHD. Jay and his wife, Renu, adopted Joslyn from Thailand. The process started when Joslyn was just nine months old. It took nearly two years to complete the adoption process — a good reason why Joslyn is a RAD kid. They sought help from numerous resources before discovering NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness). Jay began lecturing for NAMI’s Parents and Teachers as Allies program while being trained to teach the Family to Family and Basics courses.
