It's funny, I get asked the question all the time: "What is your advice for parents with rising stars?" I never looked for this for my son. I remember that Justin came to me when he was 12 years old, and he said, "Mom, I think I want to sing in a local singing competition." I thought, "Well, you've never sang in front of anybody before, and you don't have any training, so...you can try, but if you don't make it this year, then we'll get what you need and we'll come back next year. There's only 10 people that are going to make it, and it's between 12 and 18 years of age. You're only 12, so you can try--but let's not get your hopes too high." When he went to do his audition, and he made it, and he did the competition, he came in 2nd place in the whole thing. He put his videos online for his grandmother to see, in another province; that's how his videos started getting out there. Then, strangers started viewing them and requesting him to sing more songs. I never went out looking for fame for my son or anything; in fact, I was kind of "shooing" people away at first, saying "No, we're not interested...This is not for him...It's not for us." I really don't have any advice for parents on how to go about navigating a career for their children. I think in my own experience, I've learned that it's really important to surround your child with the right people. The team you put in place for them--everyone from management, to legal, to hair and makeup--all the different people that you put around them in their team are going to be a role model to them, in some sense or fashion. It's really important to pay attention to who those people are.

Pattie Mallette

New York Times Best Selling Author, Award Winning Film Producer, & Inspirational Speaker

Pattie Mallette grew up in Stratford, Ontario overcoming unimaginable obstacles in the face of abuse, poverty and an unexpected teen pregnancy. She now uses her voice to inspire others as a bestselling author, producer and influential speaker. In 2012, Pattie published her memoir, Nowhere But Up (Revell), which became a New York Times bestseller within the first week of its release. As an executive producer she worked on “Crescendo,” a short film that received 11 international film festival honors prior to its premier in February 2013. Proceeds of “Crescendo” are being used to support crisis pregnancy centers worldwide, a passion of Pattie’s that grew from her own experience. As a single parent at 18, Pattie was personally assisted by a center, which despite her difficult circumstances enabled her to be the best mother possible to her son, Justin. Continuing her desire to help others give voice to their own stories, Pattie became an executive producer of “Day One,” starring Kat Dennings (2 Broke Girls). Set to release in winter 2013, the feature film is inspired by the true story behind the global movement To Write Love on Her Arms.

Pattie recently launched her foundation called Round 2, which seeks to offer a second chance to those who have been knocked down by providing assistance and resources to those in distress. Across all platforms, her authenticity and candidness are magnetic to adolescents and adults alike as she fearlessly brings to light her own wounds and addresses sensitive issues with wisdom and insight.
