In the RIE philosophy, there is a great focus on respect for the baby. What does that mean to respect a baby? It means to, not necessarily to do what you think you would like in a situation, but what the baby might like. Stepping back a little bit to be responsive to the baby and the baby's communication, rather than reacting. To give a concrete example, one of the things is that if a baby cries. We don't immediately go in and scoop the baby up and automatically assume that is what the baby wants. If the baby falls, we don't immediately run in. We wait a minute and listen to what the baby is telling us. Ask the baby and include the baby in the process. Ask the baby what they would like, "I see that you fell, what do you need?" It leaves room for the baby in the communication and that build the relationship between the baby and the parent.
