More and more people are being diagnoses with ADHD, in part, because we've done a good job of educating the public. We are discovering true cases.
On the other hand, sometimes we over diagnose it because our society is ADD-genic. Our fast-paced, overly mediated society, where people are overstimulated electronically and understimulated interpersonally can lead people to become distractible, impulsive, and hyperactive. If you got them off their cell phone and got them sitting down at dinner, all of a sudden, those symptoms would disappear.
You want to make sure it is not pseudo ADD, culturally induced ADD. It's the true ADD. Then the diagnosis is good news because once you make it, the child or the adult can do so much better. There is no diagnosis in all of mental health, where there is greater chance for improvement in life, then the diagnosis of ADD.
When it's made properly, it's a very good diagnosis.
