What parents can do to help prepare their special needs child for an independent future is to make sure there is a transition plan included in your child's IEP, no later than their 16th birthday. It should include your child's interests and preferences. Making sure that the school is conducting the necessary assessments to prepare a good transition plan to help your child prepare for future employment, further education, or independent living; whatever high school holds for them.
