Balancing the responsibility of working and motherhood is a tricky thing for anybody. I struggle with it constantly. And the more I go through each day of my life with my toddler girls, I’m finding that balance is a scary word to use, because it gives you the false perception of having everything lined up organized every single day. Working from home is a tough thing for a mother because what I found happens to me is that I will make time to be at my computer, but then even if you have a babysitter in the house, you hear the kids yelling, playing, laughing, and even though you’re not supposed to mentally be with the kids, you are still mentally with the kids behind your computer. What works for me is to pick and choose days where I am working, even if I am working from home. For instance, I’ll hire a babysitter and say, this day is a work day. I am leaving the house physically. I am going into my back office, whatever my plan is. And I am going to work. I am not going to come out and say hi to the kids. I’m not going to play with the kids. I’m not going to react if I hear someone yelling or screaming. I am going to pretend that I am physically away from the children so I can focus on work today. Another day though, I’ll choose to be a family day where I don’t do anything that has to do with work. I won’t be checking my phone. I won’t be checking my emails. I won’t be sitting on my laptop and the computer trying to work while the girls are playing or having lunch. I have to pick and choose my priorities and focus on them as they are available to me. That’s how I balance the working at home thing. It works for me that way.
