Children, like adults, can be diagnosed with Irritable Bowel Syndrome. Is it the same cause in exactly the same thing in childhood as compared to adults? We don't know exactly, but the symptoms and signs are very similar. Usually it's a healthy person who gets bloating, maybe some dyspepsia or nausea, have irregular bowel movements, but are healthy in every other way. Children who have Irritable Bowel Syndrome usually takes the face of chronic abdominal pain, it's common school aged children, sometimes disabling. The discomfort will keep them out of school and family outings and activities. Yes, children who have this problem have just as much difficulties with day-to-day activities as adults. They need modifications of their diet. More often than not, sometimes medications are helpful, depending on the type or variety you have of Irritable Bowel Syndrome. That's a measure or reason to see the child's physician or gastroenterologist to make those recommendations.
