I far prefer that kids get their nutrients from the foods they eat. But often today in the US kids aren't. So if they aren't getting probiotics through yogurt or other ways of getting healthy bacteria in their food, I would suggest probiotics, or if they're ever taking antiobiotics. If they're not getting vitamin D from the sun or from foods that have vitamin D, I would be sure and get them a vitamin D supplement. For kids that are pretty picky eaters, particularly if they're missing out on some things, a multi-vitamin is a great safety net. And lastly, I'd pay attention to Omega 3s. Omega 3s are healthy fats that help reduce inflammation, reduce allergies. There are so many benefits. And our brains are built largely out of Omega 3s. And sadly we have lost out on eating them recently, for a lot of reasons. One is they tend to be in green, leafy vegetables, and kids eat a lot less green vegetables. And our farm animals eat less green vegetables. They're not pasture-raised anymore, by and large. They're corn fed, and soy fed, so our animal products have fewer Omega 3s than they used to. And kids eat a lot more junk food anyway. So Omega 3s have gone way down. If they get fish a couple times a week, that'll take care of it. A quarter cup of walnuts will provide Omega 3s. Flax seeds are another great source. I like chia seeds even better. They're easy to cook with. You can just sprinkle them on almost anything. But otherwise I would suggest an Omega 3 supplement to round out that important need.
