What do you do when you feel like you're failing as a parent or you're losing your temper in a parental moment? I think the first thing that you do is hit the pause button. You have some sense that Rome wasn't built in a day, and that neither are parents. Parenting is an identity, but it's also a set of practices. And by engaging a set of practices, we build our identity over time as mother or father or parent. So we know that in the moment nothing critical needs to happen. We can always push the pause button walk away, reengage whatever challenge we're facing at another moment in time when we're less stressed, more full, more open and able to address whatever challenge we're facing.
