Skin to skin is one of my favorite topics. We get to hear a lot about how it's good for breastfeeding and it's good for their vitals like keeping the heart rate stable and their temperature stable. But what we don't get to hear so much about is how the skin itself is responding as the largest organ of the body. When babies are born, they're almost completely sterile, and they come from the amniotic fluid, which has a pH of 7. So immediately they need to adjust from a water environment to an air environment. And the most important part of that happens immediately after birth. So if you think about taking a baby that's been born and putting them somewhere else, other than in mom's arms, they're being exposed potentially to pathogenic bacteria, only what's left behind after a surface has been sterilized, versus having them directly on mom's chest or on a caretaker's chest. Then they have the opportunity to be covered with the bacteria that will keep them healthy and help them thrive.
