An Umbilical hernia often happens after the umbilical cord falls of and the reason is the umbilical cord goes straight through the abdominal muscles and over time abdominal muscles come together and close over that area. So if there is a little bulge underneath your babies belly button, its may be an umbilical hernia. It’s completely normal and rarely a cause for concern. Sometimes it can be quiet large especially if you baby was born prematurely, but don’t worry, overtime, usually in the first year of life, but sometimes in the first two years of life, it will slowly go down, and the abdominal muscles will come together over that area and your baby will have a normal beautiful belly button. Now rarely if the abdominal hernia persists after three years of age, then we may ask a pediatric surgeon to take a look once in awhile go in fix the area, but if you have any question show your pediatrician that your next baby visit.
