I caution parents from restricting certain food groups from their child's diet such as gluten, unless their child has a true allergy or disease where they really need to stay away from a specific food or food group. It is very important that children get a wide variety of healthy food options. They need fresh fruit and vegetables everyday, they need whole grains, they need dairy products, they need lean meats; so if you decide as a family to eliminate one food group from your diet, it's very important that you work with a dietician or your pediatrician to ensure that your child is getting all the proper nutrition for growth and development. I find that recently I have been getting more questions from parents regarding gluten-free diets, and if their child has tummy-aches, could being gluten-free help their child's stomach-aches. The truth is that most people do find with gluten, it is a natural part of a regular, healthy, balanced diet. Now if your child truly has Celiac Disease or has an allergy, then they may need a gluten-free diet, but most of the time gluten is perfectly fine for your child.
