Paternal Postnatal Depression is the clinical term for when a man gets depressed after a child is born. That can happen anytime within the first year after his baby is born. Postpartum depression is different from the daddy blues, which many dads can experience. With normal stress or the daddy blues, a dad is going to feel better if he gets a little extra sleep, goes to the gym, has lunch with a friend; but with depression, those things won't help. With depression, the symptoms are more severe and last longer. What is shocking to most people is that fathers even get postpartum depression. Even more shocking is just how many do. Research shows that 1 in 7 new dads become depressed. The numbers go up even higher within the three to six month period after a child is born. Then 1 in 4 dads become depressed within the six month period. That amounts to over 3,000 new dads each day in the United States who become depressed. So, the problem of postpartum depression in fathers is a surprisingly common one.
