Breast milk is the best food for a child. The second best food being a cow's milk based formula. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that we transition from formula to whole cow's mild at one year of age. I recommend that children take in between one cup and three cups of milk a day. Three cups being an absolute maximum of 24 ounces. The reason is, is that cow's milk is actually a gut irritant and while milk is an excellent vehicle for deliverying calories and calcium, it actually irritates the gut, in excess, it irritates the gut, causes microscopic blood loss and potentially an iron defiency, anemia, that on occasion can be quite profound. So milk is a wonderful component of a person's diet daily but in excess can actually not be good for you.
