Every child is ready to potty train at a different time. And it's very hard for me to say when one child is ready and another child is not. What I can tell you is there are some cultures that potty train at a very young age. There are some people that wait until a child is ready. There is actually a very good study that showed that children who were potty trained prior to 27 months compared to children who were potty trained at 27 months both achieved continence at the same time. What that suggests to me is that all you're doing by trying to potty train your child before 27 months is subjecting your child to unnecessary pressure and embarrassment. In my practice, I recommend that the youngest of a children are exposed to a toddler potty at an early age. They're encouraged to play with it, become comfortable with it, not to become fearful of it, to watch mommy and daddy use the restroom. If they use the potty on their own, you throw a party and you make it the best experience of their life. So all positive reinforcement. And at 27 months of age, you take the diaper off. And you be 100% consistent in their efforts, and you let them make mistakes until they learn to achieve daytime continence.
