The pros and cons of using epidural anesthesia really will depend on the choice of the parents. I always advise my patients to do their research and find what's comfortable for them for the ideal delivery. Epidural anesthesia is completely safe in labor. It's primarily a nerve block so you do not feel the sensation of contractions during labor. It does not affect the baby in any way, and it doesn't affect the mother in making them feel drugged or foggy during the laboring process. Alternatively, IV medication has that affect on sedating the mother and the unborn fetus.
