There are many normal worries and concerns that might through the woman's mind when she is pregnant. That does not, necessarily, mean that she is depressed. Many, many pregnant go through periods of time where they are not happy and glowing. That's absolutely normal and to be expected. She might be feeling a little bit sick, moody, tearful, or forgetful. That's fine that she is not happy all the time, but if her normal worries and concerns such as gender disappointment, or am I going to love the second baby as much as the first baby? Can I handle all of this? If those normal kinds of worries and concerns start becoming obsessions. If they really start to get in the way of her functioning. If she loses her appetite or if she is not able to sleep at night because of worried thoughts in her head. If it gets in the way, it has crossed the line into a clinical disorder and she should really get help.

Dr. Shosh is a pioneer in the field.  She is a survivor of two life-threatening postpartum depressions. She founded Postpartum Assistance for Mothers in 1987, and is a former president of Postpartum Support International. Dr. Shosh helped develop the official Postpartum Support International training curriculum for professionals which is now considered the gold standard in the field. She has helped over 19,000 women worldwide through individual consultations, support groups and wellness seminars.  As a noted guest lecturer and keynote speaker, she travels throughout the US and abroad, training medical and mental health professionals to assess and treat postpartum depression and related mood and anxiety disorders. She earned three teaching credentials, two masters degrees, a PhD and is licensed as a clinical psychologist.
