At Red Tricycle, we've created a Bucket List of things that you must do with your kids before they're 5 years old. Our inspiration was a little girl named Quinn in New York who was terminally ill. And her parents came up with a list of things that they wanted to do with her. And it made us realize that life is short with your children. You want to do as much as you can. Here's our list of things to do with kids before they're 5 years old. Number one, visit a farm or start a garden with your children. Make a connection with them about the food you eat and its connection with the earth. Particularly apple picking or pumpkin patch picking are popular in the fall. The second thing you want to do with your kids is build a sandcastle. And you can do this at the beach or in a sandbox, but building a sandcastle is a memorable experience that you want to do with your kid for the first time. The third thing is as parents we're so fixated on our kids going to bed early. But just once, let your kids stay up late. Star gaze with them, or maybe let them stay up for fireworks. It's so special for them to be able to stay up when the grown ups are awake, and it's a memorable thing for them at 5 years old. The fourth thing is take them to see either a sporting event or a live theater performance. Kids get so much exposure to television and movies these days. To see a sporting event or a musical experience is really a different experience for them and may give them a different perception of those arts. Build a snowman. I mean that seems like a given, but if you don't live close to snow you may not check it off your list. Make the effort to drive to snow or find it somewhere so your kids can have that experience before they're 5 years old. Ride a carousel. We're not all going to get to Disneyland or Disneyworld. That's really a big ticket item. But I think everybody has access to a carousel probably within an hour's drive. And for a kid who's under 5 years old, a carousel is Disneyland. It's a really magical experience that you want to have with them. Swim in a lake or an ocean. All of our kids have paddle pools and swimming pools that they have access to, but make sure they experience a natural environment as well, whether it's a lake or an ocean. Let them at least get their feet wet and taste what salt water tastes like. Take your kids camping. It may seem counterintuitive. You may not think camping with kids under 5 is a good combination. But this exposure to outdoors at an early age really sets a love of nature.
