My mother was very strange about me breastfeeding. I was a baby in the late 60s, I guess it was passé then, she didn’t breastfeed me at all. She had a real problem with me breastfeeding over a year and she would make these judgments and say, “How could you?” And, “What are you doing?” And, “Get your body back and get your life back.”
And it was really hard to decide that as much as I adore my mom and I know she’s giving me what she considers is her best advice, that I had to trust that my instinct about being a mom was spot on, and that I wanted to nurse my daughter over a year, my second daughter – it was the last time I’d have a child and it was a very beautiful experience for me and I had to decide that… not to care about my mother’s judgment.

Dani Shear is a writer and the mother of two kids, who are five years apart – an age gap she highly recommends. When her daughter was seven months old, Dani and her husband decided to change her name – a process that leads her to believe that if you can possibly agree on a name before putting it on the birth certificate, it would be a really smart idea!
