Sleep for school-aged kids

The typical elementary school aged child needs about 10-10.5 hours of sleep per night. So I tell the parents, try to do the math backwards. So if they have to get up at 6, that means they need to asleep by 8 p.m. to get that 10.5 hours of sleep. And I know that's hard, because I already hear the parents in my hear saying, Kim, we don't get home until - we have soccer and then there's dinner and there's homework. And how are we going to get them to sleep by 8 o'clock? We're usually not having them in the shower until 8:30. And I understand that. I think that is a really big struggle. Of course, I'm biased. Sleep is really essential. It is as important as learning is and good nutrition and taking care of our bodies. It is essential. And so I would like at is there a way to reduce the number of activities so that every night there isn't something, so that we only have late nights on Tuesdays and Thursdays? Not Mon-Sun. Somewhere where our children can catch up at least every other night on their sleep and have a slightly earlier bedtime. And I think that you'll find your children end up doing slightly better in school and oftentimes they're better behaved when they're well rested.

Kim received her master’s degree in Clinical Social Work from Simmons College in Boston, Massachusetts. She lives with her family in Annapolis, Maryland.
