So some things at home that you can do to help your child is one that I think is really important is be involved in the therapy. Observe, observe, observe. With technology, if you can’t be there, you could even have your therapist tape some of the sessions, so you could see what goes on so you can carry that over in the home. Sometimes therapy settings have an actual observation room where you can go. Some therapists cut out time at the end of the session so they can help the parents work with their child so they can give them activities to do and practice. I also think it’s important to have everyone on your team have meetings so you’re working together to make sure you’re not working against each other. So you’re consistent in the way you’re dealing with the behavior. I often have the behavior teachers come into my speech and language sessions so they can carry over some of my goals, so they’re not only getting it with me, they’re getting it with somebody else. Also, there’s just a lot of great books out there that help teach parents techniques on how to teach their child and there’s classes out there that you can take where you can learn techniques with working with your child.
