Stephen Wallace: To some degree, the camping industry has migrated from what we considered to be traditional summer camps, like the camp I work at in Massachusetts, to the way of specialty camps where some particular sport or art or music or dance. And those are wonderful experiences for young people to have. It helps them in a number of ways. Number 1, it allows them to really zero in on a particular interest or strength that they have. Number 2, it helps them to build skills in those areas. And number 3, it allows them to meet other kids with similar interests. When I train camp counselors, one of the things I talk about is lyrics from a Jimmy Buffett song where he says, I never got a grip on penmanships, seldom found the key to arithmetic, but ask for some palm trees or some tales from the south seas then I might just turn your head. And I think that’s just a powerful set of lyrics. What does it tell us? It tells us that every kid has a passion, a strength. All we need to do is to find it and unlock it and help that child run with it.
