Dealing with bullies and mean girls are, sadly, just a fact of life. No one gets through even grade school without getting into some kind of conflict, big or small. You can't be there to fight your kids battle all the time. What we need to do is teach our girls the right skills for conflict resolution, for problem solving, and try as hard as you can to let them work it out for themselves. These early same-sex relationships are really going to be the templates for these girls going forward in their lives. It's not so much the situation, it is really how she handles herself. That is something that is very empowering because it gives her a send of control that she can work it out on her own. In my workshops, I always start out a class by saying, "Sticks and stones will break your bones, but words will..." And they always say, "never harm you." They fill in the blank. I ask them, do you believe that? They all shake their head, no. The truth is words do hurt. Especially, depending upon the motivation of the speaker, it can really rile people up. I also think it's important to teach that words can heal, too. It's not the words that are bad, it is the intent and the motivation behind them.
