There are several things you can do with your child to help him to become more independent with his homework. Our goal is to have children doing their homework independently by fourth grade. This ensures academic success in the upper elementary middle school and high school years. Parents need to remember however, this is a process and it's sometimes a journey to get there. Some of our children enjoy doing their homework independently from kindergarten, but most of our children do not. So I am going to give you 2 tips on helping your child to get through that process of ultimately becoming a child who can do his homework independently. Set up a routine as early as kindergarten and that routine should include doing homework in the same place, at the same time, in a dedicated work space every day. Between kindergarten and third grade, know that for many children it is hard to do homework independently. So take it in small chunks of time. Even a kitchen timer works. If your child can do 10 minutes of homework without your help, this is a major achievement. And praise your child for this.
