I know, as a mom myself of a son -- who is now 18 years old, and I've lived to tell about it -- that helping him with his homework is a real challenge. There is like 13 years of school ahead. I learned, early on, that the easiest direction to ride a horse, was the direction it was already going. It was easiest way to ride it. I looked at my son, who was very, very active, and would not sit for a minute. He was up and down, and over and under, and would not sit at the table. I realized, that insisting he do it my way, wasn't going to work; I had to go to the child. So I found him under the table or over the sofa and we made games. We made movement out of it. We made a competition out of it. Sometimes we would go for a walk and study. Sometimes we would shoot hoops and study. Sometimes we would challenge each other to come up with the silliest story that we could each possibly write and then compare stories; if he had to write a story for school. We found things that he really liked. I spent a lot of time in bookstores trying to find books that he likes. Often times, kids have to read a book outside of school and that was always a challenge. It was always about making movement, things that were a fun challenge, and getting things that were a high challenges. Getting your busy boy to sit still and do work at the table is always going to be a battle. We have to let those boys out of their seats and make it more active and more fun.
