SAFE Alternatives stands for Self Abuse Finally Ends. And we do have a different model than a 12-step addiction model because we don't believe in the disease model. So our program really is not focused on this is a life-long struggle and that as an identity for the person. For example, in AA, poeple say, "Hello. I'm Wendy and I'm an alcoholic." But we don't want self-injurers to see themselves as that's their identity. So we don't want people saying, "I'm a self-injurer." They self-injur as a behavior, but that's not who they are. So we separate that out very clearly. Our program is also one of empowerment. So rather than giving up control and saying, "I'm powerless to be able to deal with this behavior," we're saying it's a choice. And it just needs to be made into consciousness so that you're aware of that choice and that you can make an active choice every time that you have an impulse to injure.
