If you are a parent who has a child who has been sentenced to juvenile detention, I know that you are afraid. You are afraid that your child is going to walk into this program, this jail, that you perceived to be a jail. It's not a jail. It's a detention center and there are two different thing there. I'll explain that in a moment. You are afraid that your child is going to walk into this bad place and they are going to come out worse. In reality, when they go into this place, they can come out worse because of the associations they create in that environment. That's why you have to work with your child. You have to work with the detention center and detention officer, to work as a team, to make sure your child does not get caught up into a new world of bad people. Those people that they are hanging out with in there, those are people who have made a mistake, and want to rehabilitate. Some of those kids have made mistakes and have a path that is going to lead to trouble as an adult. You want to make sure that your kid is hanging with the right group. That the counselors in there are helping him, because that is going to be the difference between a jail and a detention center. It is set up as a counseling system. It is set up as a way to help your kid grow and learn from their experience. That goes back to why it's kind of important that you didn't step up and say, "I'm going to do everything I can help this kid get out of trouble." They need to learn from the mistakes that they make. Sometimes, those mistakes are tough to learn, but the time to make them is now as a juvenile, instead of an adult.
