Why wasn't I nervous when my kids started driving at 16? I think it was the 16 years before that, that set the stage for it. Raising a child from birth to age 16 is a lifetime. At 16 and they get in their car and take off down the road and you're looking at them. If you haven't done it right by that point, yeah, you are going to be nervous. I felt very confident of the fact that I had raised my children, up to that point, that they are going to make the right decisions. They are going to make the right decisions on their friends that are going to get in the car with them. They are going to make the right decisions on how reckless they want to drive. I was very much a car enthusiast, so I taught my children well, as far as the technical end of driving. I was not worried about. I was only really worried about other influences. I wasn't worried about my kids driving. I was worried about the other influences on them while they were out. "Oh, she's got a car, let's all jump in there." I had the confidence to know that my daughter was going to say "no."
