The media certainly play a role in teen drug use. You don’t have to look very far to find a movie or a television show or a song that glamorizes drug and alcohol use. An impressionable young minds are incredibly likely and very quick to take those messages to heart. There’s a ton of information out there that says that smoking is seen in movies, directly causing an increase in smoking in teenagers to see those scenes, now that said, media are now more powerful than parents. If you take those smoking scenes that we just discussed and talk with your kid about that scene after they’ve seen it looses it’s ability that caused them to smoke at a higher rate. Parents also can help their kids by controlling or at least overseeing the type of media that their kids are exposed to. My daughter is 9, what we do with her is we basically check common sense media for content information about movies that my daughter wants to see and we exercise our judgment, we were incredibly quick to talk with her about things that may have confused her or we feel may mislead her. The important thing here is that the media lose their power to influence your kids’ decision as you become more involved in your kids life and talk with them about the media that they’re seeing.
