When and how to begin bottle weaning

Bottle weaning really begins around six months when parents introduce solids to their baby. You have the opportunity, then, to introduce a cup which gives your baby the opportunity to practice cup skills and to get used to taking different liquids through a different vessel. When parents do this and approach the one year mark, when we encourage parents to wean kids from the bottle full, the transition goes more smoothly. As babies first year approaches, that need for non-nutritive sucking fades, as does the baby's need for a bottle. Between 12 and 15 months is the best window. Parents can employ a replacement process where they replace the bottles with a cup of milk or a snack. Over time, consistently offering this replacement, the child gets used to taking increased volume from this different vessel.
