There are basically four different types of sleep training methods. I know there are a lot of books out there, but behavioral science wise there are only four. So the first one is extinction, meaning put the baby in awake and don´t go in all night long. The other one is called gradual extinction. So you go in and you check on them in timed increments, five, 10, 15 minute increments. The other method is fading, which is the one I tend to recommend, where you stay with your child offering physical and verbal reassurance to help them go to sleep and then you slowly move out. And then the last one is doing nothing, which believe or not is a method because making no decision is still a decision and it´s still something you do. And then, I find that those parents hope that their child will naturally outgrow the problem, which usually it doesn´t work that way but sometimes it can. So those are the four most common sleep training methods.
