I want to talk a little bit about cognitive behavior therapy for weight control. Cognitive behavior therapy is the application of science, psychological science, biological science, to problems in living. It´s really all it is. And those scientific principles get translated in ways that help people change like setting goals, like solving problems, like self monitoring. These are all cognitive behavorial techniques. These are critical for effective weight control. They can sometimes be learned in self help groups, in just reading about it. But for somebody who is really struggling, seeing someone who is an expert cognitive behavior therapist will help them, will accelerate the process. So cognitive behavior therapy is a very useful component of professionally delivered weight loss services. Other therapies can be involved in a person´s life. I don´t particularly recommend them because they don´t have a sceintific basis. Freudian, psycholoanalytic therapy kind of made sense in 1930 but it doesn´t make that much sense in 2012. It really doesn´t help people change. It doesn´t help people solve the problems in their lives so I am not going to recommend that for anybody. So I recommend people follow scientifically based approaches for anything that they are trying to do with their lives.
