How is our biology connected to weight gain?

We are faced with a really strange challenge in that we live in a time when food is incredibly abundant and activity is not required to be a successful human being but our bodies were created 200,000 years ago when we were all hunter gathers. We were all working every day. We could not just go somewhere and buy some Nikes for our feet. We had to create our own shoes. We had to create our own clothes. We had to find our own food. During that time, it was incredibly helpful if our bodies had the capacity to gain excess weight easily and keep that weight on. Over the past 200,000 years nothing has changed biologically. We have the exact same biologies as our ancestors with radical changes in our life style. We do not have to move and we can take care of ourselves by going to a corner store. So because of this biological change, a change in the way we function does not coincide with our biological heritage. Our biology has become our enemy. Our bodies want us to keep the excess weight that we get on our bodies either starting out in life or later in life if we gain weight then. So we are up against it. But every athlete is up against the same biological challenge. Biology is not destiny.
