A fascinating recent study on epidemiology looked at the trend of obesity in our culture, the United States. They found something incredibly alarming, by the year 2030, they predicted that 86 percent of all the adults in the United States would be overweight or obese. That's pretty much everybody. If your children are of normal weight, that's great, but they are heading into a place that isn't so great. Every parent cares about their children's health and well-being long term. Take some important steps. Number one, emphasize activity. Activities are really great to help prevent the development of obesity. Almost any kind of activity beats being sedentary. Number two is make some changes in the food environment at home, even if no one has a weight problem. The main change, the simplest change, the most elegant change that any parent can make is to aim for a very low-fat diet. That means you get rid of the high fat chips and replace them with low-fat pretzels. Get rid of the high fat popcorn and replace it with low-fat popcorn. Get rid of the high fat cheese and replace it with very low-fat cheese. Skim milk, instead of whole milk for children two years of age or older. These are the things that every parent can do. It's different from what everyone around you is doing. You're going to find yourself at parties and family gatherings, having a very different orientation to the food, but it's different, better.
