In thinking about fears prospective adoptive parents have about open adoption, probably the most common question I get is, “Later down the line, when she gets her life together, won’t she want the baby back?” I think to answer that we have to come back to who this person is that’s making an adoption plan. In order to go through with placing a child for adoption that person has to be extremely selfless and really be concentrated about what’s in the best interest of the child. Because the amount of pain that a woman goes through when she places is enormous. It’s that same woman 10 years later who’s going to make decisions of what’s in the best interest of her child. So she’s not going to want to take the child away from the only parents they’ve ever know – that’s the most devastating thing you can do to a child. When it comes to regret, the only regret a birth mother would usually have would be, “I wish I was at different stage of life when I gave birth.” But given the circumstance that she was in, she’s going to feel confident and proud of the decision she’s made as she sees her child grow up.
