Children's x-rays are recommended based on a need basis. Basically, what that says is, clinically as a dentist, we can't see something. For example, spaces in between teeth, teeth that are close together; we need x-rays to see what is going on and make sure no cavities are forming. Additionally, x-rays really help in determining growth patterns, any abnormalities, and any issues that may arise. At your child's first appointment, they won't be getting any x-rays unless the dentist feels it's necessary, based on the clinical exam. As a child gets older and get into what is called a mixed dentition, the grown up and the baby teeth, it's important to make sure that we are determining and diagnosing any changes in bone pattern, growth, and development.
