Both types of diabetes can be diagnosed across the lifespan. Type I diabetes used to be called juvenile diabetes, because 85% of the time it's diagnosed under the age of 18. But now we're learning that even 40-, 50-, 60-year olds can be diagnosed for the first time with Type I diabetes. The most common age of onset is during middle childhood, during the elementary school years, with a second peak during puberty. But children as young as nine months, ten months old can be diagnosed with Type I diabetes. Type II diabetes historically was called adult onset diabetes, but we now know that children can be diagnosed with it as well, so we call it Type II diabetes. It usually is not diagnosed until a child has started puberty, but with the obesity epidemic, we're seeing it diagnosed at younger and younger ages. A couple weeks ago I just diagnosed an 8-year old with Type II diabetes.
