Megan's Law is a federal law that was implemented in 1996. Every state in the United States has its own version of Megan's Law. Basically, Megan's Law tells the public when a sex offender has been released back into the community. So Megan's Law is really an awareness tool. It tells us when a molester has been caught, convicted, done their time, and then are released back into the community. Megan's Law websites allow the public to go online and search to see if there's a molester who may be living in our area. Megan's Law is a great awareness tool, but it's only half the battle. If we focus only on registered sex offenders, we can inadvertently let other people who simply haven't been caught and convicted, we can end up letting them access our kids because we're not looking in the right place. So Megan's Law, it's a great starting point in child safety but it's not the whole story.
