I work for Save the Children. It’s an international non-governmental organization, an NGO. It does work in 150 countries around the world and all across the United States as well. I ran their US programs for about 10 years. We focus on early childhood education, a home visiting program for little babies from the ages of 0-5, making sure that they’re entering kindergarten ready to learn. It’s so important, particularly in America for families living in poverty that they enter kindergarten ready to learn. A kid at 4 years of age is 18 months behind developmentally from my kid. So we spend billions of dollars trying to get those kids back up to speed over the course of their elementary and high school career. And many times those kids don’t get up to speed. So they’re at a huge disadvantage. And Save the Children focuses in on those critical first 5 years of life. And then we run in-school, after school, and summer literacy programs for them and for 2nd and 3rd grade. We do a lot of work on disaster recovery not only around the world but here in the United States as well. Internationally we focus more on education and health, disaster response, a lot of micro-lending to help women in particular start businesses that will help them sustain their family. We also do a lot of work on HIV and AIDS internationally as well. Save the Children is a huge operation that has an impact on kids’ lives here in the US and in 150 countries around the world as well.
