The sequencing of infant foods falls into two distinct categories. Stage one, which are very fine purees; and stage two, which are thicker purees with lumps in them that encourages the child to chew and crush. If you are preparing your own, you want to steam or bake the vegetables. Clean them, steam them, makes sure you peel them, and then puree the inside of the vegetables very, very fine. It can best be stored for future use or it can be used fresh, for four days out of the refrigerator. When you get to the stage two, the thicker purees, you can just make it a little thicker. Use the same rotation of vegetables and fruits. By age 8 months, you are adding some proteins into their diet. Stage three foods are really just a marketing convenience. By the time your child gets to be 9 or 10 months of age, they should be seguing into regular eating.

Cynthia Epps, MS, IBCLC holds a master’s degree in nutritional biochemistry and is a board certified lactation consultant in private practice in Los Angeles, California.
